5 Fun Winter Outings in Charleston, SC

The winter season may be a little too chilly for the usual beach activities so loved by the residents of the greater Charleston metropolitan area, but there are still many fun things to see and do until spring comes. There are indoor activities all over town that will entertain adults and kids alike. Check them out by yourself or take the whole family!

Five Fun Winter Outings in Charleston

1. Citadel Mall

The region’s largest mall is in West Ashley. Visit the wonderful Citadel Mall with its more than 100 specialty stores and great eateries. Enjoy lunch at the King Street Grill or try some of Pug’s Pulled Pork. There are large department stores like Dillard’s, smaller chain stores such as Old Navy, and boutique stores like Rainbow Apparel and Chucktown Chicks.

2. Haunted Jail Tour

This walking tour of Charleston’s old jails takes you to some of the most infamous spots in the city. Even though you are outdoors some, most of the tour is spent inside. Both the Old Jail of Charleston and the Provost Dungeon are included on this tour.

3. Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon

If you want to delve even deeper into history, tour one of the most notable remaining colonial buildings from the 18th century. Also known as the Custom House, it was here that early Americans conducted trade and business. Head downstairs to the eerie underground of Charleston to see the Provost Dungeon, where some of the most notable criminals in the area where held. The building houses exhibits, videos and artifacts explaining all the history,

4.  35th Annual Charleston Boat Show

A much-anticipated Charleston tradition, the boat show this winter will be January 23 through 25, 2015. Exhibitors come to demonstrate their newest power boats and many other products. There are exhibits of products; items for sale such as nautical paintings and prints, tee shirts and sunglasses; and things to do such as fishing simulations.

5.  South Carolina Aquarium on Charleston Harbor

In addition to all the wonderful animals at the Aquarium, there are a large number of hands-on exhibits that include information on many ocean and land-dwelling animals. Salvage of the Seas, a showing of artwork made of recycled industrial materials by local artist Daniel Miner, will be on display through January 15, 2015. SCUBA Santa is swimming in the Great Ocean Tank at 11:00 am every Saturday and Sunday from November 29th until December 21st. During this same time frame, see if you can spot Finzy, the Shark on the Shelf, in the aquarium somewhere and you will get a festive prize.
